specific quotes would be great! im writing an essay comparing of mice and men to the 1930s and how the book portrays the decade
How does the novel %26quot;Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck%26quot; compare to the 1930s? (themes, motifs, etc.,)
The 1930%26#039;s were a decade of social upheaval. Steinbeck was a communist. When he portrays these two down and outers in _Of Mice and Men,_ he is mirroring the decade%26#039;s concern with the downtrodden, the outcast. Moreover, the latent power in Lenny et. al. (the small animals he kills without meaning to) combined with his primitive understanding represent the dumb, animal condition of humanity and the buried force of the masses. The two men, simple and elemental, are devoted to each other. They are a socialist system in miniature. In 1937, their simple rural concerns seemed more elemental and humanly important than the parties in _The Great Gatsby_ or the self-regarding dissipation of _The Sun Also Rises._
